Tackling the lonely feeling in teens: The role of parents and peer support

Understanding Loneliness in Adolescents

Loneliness is a common experience among teenagers. It happens when young people feel their social connections are lacking. This feeling can lead to negative well-being. Adolescents may feel lonely in specific relationships, like with parents or friends (emotional loneliness), or in broader social settings, such as within peer groups or family dynamics (social loneliness).

The Role of Parenting

Positive parenting, which includes warmth and support, is crucial for healthy adolescent development. Strength-Based Parenting (SBP), which focuses on developing children’s positive qualities, has shown to improve adolescents’ well-being. When parents are accepting, it helps teenagers form secure attachments, creating a strong foundation for their social relationships. On the other hand, unsupportive parenting, characterized by rejection, chaos, and coercion, can harm adolescents’ sense of belonging and self-confidence. This type of parenting can prevent children from developing psychological autonomy and lead to increase the risk of negative well-being.

The Importance of Peer Support

Social support from peers is vital for protecting adolescent mental health, especially in stressful times. Peer support can reduce the negative effects of loneliness by boosting positive self-assessment and self-esteem, resilience, self-efficacy, and emotional regulation. This support helps shield adolescents from negative well-being outcomes.

Our Study

In this study, we will explore how emotional and social loneliness affect well-being in early adolescence in Indonesia. We will also examine the roles of positive and negative parenting and peer support in this context.

Should parent change their parenting style to help lonely teen?

Understanding the Dynamics of Loneliness and Parenting in Early Adolescence

We recognize the importance of conducting a longitudinal study to explore the relationships between loneliness and parenting during early adolescence. This is a novel area of research, as such studies have not been conducted before in Indonesia. The idea is based on the premise that early adolescents go through significant transitions, and addressing their changing needs requires parents to adjust their responses to their adolescents’ emotions.

Parent and Adolescent Dynamics

As adolescents develop cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally, parents may modify their parenting behaviors accordingly. Adolescents, in turn, expect parental involvement to help them navigate their emotional and psychological experiences throughout adolescence.

Our Study

Our study aims to gain insights into the stability of feelings of loneliness and loneliness, and how these factors may influence each other over time. It is crucial to understand how these relationships develop and affect each other throughout adolescence. Previous studies on adolescent loneliness have primarily been conducted in Western societies, such as the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, and New Zealand. Our study is important because it focuses on the Indonesian population. Understanding these dynamics can help us develop better interventions and support systems for adolescents.
